Job-specific English Curriculum

We just moved to Northern Laos where I took a position as a manager at a growing eco-tourism company.  After getting settled, one of my first tasks was to create an English curriculum for the Lao staff. A previous employee had put together a training program for the tasks the restaurant staff must learn.  This gave me a great place to start, as the English these Lao women need to use for their job could all be taken from those tasks.  I incorporated the task training with a new English language element.  Now, they are learning not only how to do the different tasks, but also how to talk about them in English.  Customers and English speaking coworkers can now begin to communicate with the Lao staff about the everyday tasks that go on in the restaurant.
